Okay so here's the topic. Maybe I'm mistaken, but, you know, judging by number of downloads worldwide over the year of the game's existence(~600k) and number of original content available for it (about ~15 pages of fanart on pixiv) I can't say that Granblue Fantasy is doing very well in terms of fanbase. (I haven't checked any official forums or fan forums, my japanese is not that good, unfortunately. Things may be different there.)
Now, the next part of the topic might sound a bit fanboyish(I've started playing this game more than half a year ago and participated in every event since then), so forgive me:
I can understand that people already got attached to some of the most popular japanese games like Idolmaster: CG, Puzzle&Dragons, Dragon Poker, Million Arthur etc. but hey, what's there not to like in Granblue? It has top-notch artwork from character designer of Final Fantasy Tactics, Bravely Default and other games(If I'm not mistaken), Nobuo Uematsu soundtrack, Voice-acting featuring not just random people, but some of the most popular ones, like Katarina's seiyu - Sawashiro Miyuki. Well I would also understand that it can't mean anything to some people, let's proceed to gameplay:
You get a jrpg-style fully voiced combat with great music and a bit of a strategy. It's not 'hardcore'-tier but it still has more 'tactics' in it than just mindlessly tapping the screen to proceed(I've played enough japanese ccgs and I understand why they can be captivating, I'm not blaming the 'gameplay' there). Yeah, sure, characters are pretty rare to come by, I'd say that characters are the most rare 'resource' in the game. But that's EXACTLY why they're valuable. They're not just an image with attack and def stats. They're fully voiced(sorry to emphasize it that much), they have sprites with multiple animations, they have skills and a few side-stories(also awesome ougi).
Granblue Fantasy's 'premium' system is probably one of the fairest I've ever seen. Especially after the 'achievements' update. You basically get gems each time you do something worth an effort. Even during event days I'm not playing the game this much. And still by playing about 30min~2 hours daily(depending on the situation) I get enough gems to draw a 10 SR+ gacha roll once a month. That is pretty good for me, considering the playtime. Lastly: Most ccgs out there have pretty strict Events, where players just either have to be high enough level or have enough restoration items to grind for DAYS and WEEKS to even get a chance at taking top reward. I don't know about you guys, but it takes about 2 days for me to obtain: 1) event's characters, 2) event's summon 3) a bunch of event weapons. It's mostly luck-based(Except for characters, I'm actually glad they moved from the 'Get everything in your first ours of playing if you're lucky'-model by providing a 'bond/trust'-meter). Yeah, sure you have to grind a lot more if you want to break your weapon's and summon's level cap and you still have to grind even more for evolve materials, but I can't even compare GranBlue's grind to other mobile games I tried. It's just too user-friendly sometimes.
In my opinion: This game has 'quality' written all over it. And it's not asking too much from players, yet there's the topic I'm returning to. Why do you think the things are like this? Why some games where you just collect waifus(I'm not criticizing them, mind you, I'm fond of some as well) get like 2 million downloads worldwide and they're nowhere near the quality you get in Granblue?
Thanks for reading.
