Hey gbf-english!
I'm Mana, and I run granblue-wiki.com.
Up until now, I and a very small group of Granblue Fantasy players have been working on laying the groundwork for the wiki in anticipation of the English translation. Eventually, we'd like to perform many of the same functions as the japanese wiki, hopefully in a format that's much easier to read and understand. While the project was relatively quiet for its first 2 months, we've since gotten a huge influx of visitors and it's become apparent that we need to seek help from outside sources in supplying useful information.
FAQ:
Why a wiki?
Wikis are an incredibly powerful tool for collaboration. They also make it easy for users who know very little about web design to publish their knowledge. Finally, the wiki linking system allows for the easy exploration of related ideas and concepts.
Why another wiki?
We've all seen how useful the JP Wiki is. I won't argue its dominance of the medium. But there are also currently (dormant) gamepedia and wikia wikis for Granblue Fantasy. I chose not to utilize a wiki farm and build a wiki from the ground up for a couple of reasons:
1) I can better control the structure of the site to hopefully craft a better user experience for GBF players.
2) I can more easily control the content we serve to users. You'll notice there are no ads on the wiki. We're also trying to send users as little extra data as possible to improve pagespeed and allow for a (future) focus on mobile users, seeing as quite a few people play GBF on a mobile device.
and, most importantly, 3) The current wikis were relatively devoid of content. If any of the English wikis were significantly near completion, I would not have embarked on this journey.
What can I do to help as a complete wiki novice?
We have a few areas of content that need fleshing out.
- Characters - SSRs are almost all in, but most of the SR characters and all of the R characters still need pages. The template for creating character pages is at granblue-wiki.com/index.php?title=Template:Charbox
- Guides and FAQ - There are quite a few topics left to cover for new players, including things like damage calculation, buff stacking, stats/skills, etc. I'd prefer separate pages be made for any sufficiently long topic explanation, but the basic FAQ is available at: granblue-wiki.com/index.php?title=FAQ
To help people start out, we've started a style guide to set out guidelines for page consistency.
In addition to that, we understand many people aren't familiar with wiki markup. If you haven't ever edited a wiki, take a look at Wikipedia's wiki markup page. Here's a few important pieces of syntax that most people will use in a page:
- Page Links
[[page title]]
internal wiki link to "page title". The text of the link will match the title. If you'd like to display different text, use [[page title|Text]]- Headings and Sections
= Heading =
adds a new heading with the text "Heading". For sections and sub-sections, add more pairs of ='s. For example, a section would be == Section ==. For those familiar with html, these are identical to <h1>, <h2>, <h3>, etc. tags. If a page has 4 headings, a table of contents will automatically be shown at the top of the page. To disable this, type __NOTOC__ at the top of the page.- Tables:
{| class="wikitable"
| Row 1 column 1
| Row 1 column 2
|-
| Row 2 column 1
| Row 2 column 2
|}
- {| and |} specify the start and end of a table. These are required.
- | specifies table data.
- |- specifies the start of a new row. This is optional for the first row as the wiki will assume all tables have at least 1 row.
- The above syntax would result in this table:
Row 1 column 1 Row 1 column 2 Row 2 column 1 Row 2 column 2
- If you'd like to convert a google docs or excel spreadsheet into a wiki table, you can use this copy&paste tool: marianogappa.github.io/mediawiki-table-utility/
I've worked with wikis before, how can I help?
I and the others are (generally) new to wiki syntax and markup. We've muddled our way through a few templates, but we still need templates for:
- Jobs - our rough draft job template is here: granblue-wiki.com/index.php?title=Template:Jobbox
- Summons
- Multiplayer and Solo Events
Thanks for reading. I'm usually available at #granblue-wiki on Rizon, but I'll start checking in here. Wiki editing and page creation are now open to all new users. ReverseG is working on a style guide, which I'll add to this post soon.
